Staying true to himself, coach Jamike Jarin used all 15 of his players in San Beda College’s first game in the 92nd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
It was no throwaway game as the Red Lions were pitted against archrival and defending champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
The Red Lions were in control for majority of the matchup, leading by as much as 13, but were always threatened by their archrivals who just kept coming and coming.
Still, Mendiola’s second-year shot-caller stuck to his guns. His decision paid off big-time as it was first-year player Davon Potts and backup pointman Ranbill Tongco who connived in the pivotal 13-4 push in the final frame.
During that time, team leaders Dan Sara and Javee Mocon were on the bench and mere cheerleaders as San Beda fended off countless charges from the Knights. Proud that his philosophy proved itself, Jarin expressed, “This team was built to be selfless.”
Indeed, 11 of the 15 Lions who saw action contributed in the scoring column. Four of those then ended in double-digits, including erstwhile anonymous Potts who turned in his best game in his debut for the red and white.
Of course, their top-to-bottom stellar showing could also be because of who they were facing. As Mocon put it, “Kapag (Letran) talaga kalaban namin, mas motivated kami.”
