San Beda Officially Retires Caloy Loyzaga’s #14

THE BIG DIFFERENCE. Honoring his greatness, the NCAA honored Caloy Loyzaga as the first-ever player to have his jersey retired by a member school.

Now in its 92nd Season, the NCAA is only continuing to make history. The country’s first and oldest collegiate league retired its first-ever jersey number on Saturday at the MOA Arena.

And the player whose number they retired is as deserving as they come – Caloy Loyzaga.

“The Big Difference” was a two-time NCAA champion back when he was a Red Lion in the 1950s. He then made a bigger name for himself afterward as a member of the men’s national basketball team.

Loyzaga.was part of the last Philippine team that played in the Olympics and was a Mythical selection in the 1954 FIBA World Championships.

For his inarguable greatness, his jersey number was the first-ever to be retired by any NCAA member school. “We shall now declare his number 14 retired. No other player of San Beda can use his number from now on,” league president Fr. Aloysius Maranan said.

Accepting the commemorative jersey from the league were Loyzaga’s children Bing, Chito, Joey, and Teresa. Nothing but thankful about the recognition, Chito expressed, “We are deeply grateful for the gesture and to the NCAA for granting him the honor of being remembered today.”

He then continued, “We hope that you will remember him as one who loved his country above his personal ambition. As well as one who loved his teammatea as his own family.”
